Community News

Denton City Council Supports Three Affordable Housing Projects

The Denton City Council has recently approved support for three affordable housing projects, including McAdams Haven, which aims to provide housing and supportive services for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness. This approval enables the developers to apply for federal tax credits essential for funding these initiatives.

McAdams Haven is designed as a permanent supportive housing development, offering on-site services to assist residents in achieving stability. The other two projects also focus on expanding affordable housing options in Denton, though specific details about these developments were not extensively discussed during the council meeting.

The application process for these federal tax credits is highly competitive, and obtaining city approval is a crucial step in securing the necessary funding. If the tax credits are awarded, these projects will proceed, contributing to an increase in Denton's affordable housing inventory. This initiative reflects the city's ongoing efforts to enhance housing accessibility and address long-term housing challenges within the community.

Community Updates:

  • Highland Village Water System Conversion Coming in March: The City of Highland Village will temporarily change the disinfectant in its public water system from March 19 to April 9, 2025. The switch from chloramine to free chlorine, combined with the use of groundwater instead of surface water, may affect the taste, odor, and feel of tap water. Despite these changes, the water will remain safe to drink and will be rigorously tested. This annual process helps reduce nitrification levels and minimizes water flushing during the summer.(Cross Timbers Gazette)

  • New Fire Training Complex Opens in Flower Mound: Last week, Flower Mound, Highland Village, and Lewisville celebrated the grand opening of the new John Ashman Fire Training Complex. This $6.9 million facility, located at 701 E. Valley Ridge Blvd., was developed through a partnership between the Flower Mound and Lewisville Fire Departments, with Highland Village joining in 2019. The complex features a drill tower, classrooms, and equipment to train for various emergency response scenarios, from fires to technical rescues. (Cross Timbers Gazette)
